Are all tech jobs created equal?
I missed the Women in Tech conference in Stockholm last week. Everyone I spoke with who attended felt inspired and motivated being around such phenomenal women in the tech industry. There was an article published by CIO in conjunction with Glassdoor naming the top paying IT jobs in the US. IT salaries can be quite lucrative if you have the right skills.
The salary list.
There has been quite a bit of focus recently on the lack of diversity in the tech field but I wanted to know how women were represented in the highest-paying IT jobs. Taking the data from Glassdoor I did a cross-comparison with gender distribution datafrom Payscale.
Here is a chart showing the percentage of males relative to females represented in each job.
Now compare with the salary list.
What struck me was that the two lowest paying salaries on the list are the only jobs where there are more than 20% of women represented. Is this a mere coincidence? Is there something sinister going on? Perhaps, Software Development Managers command higher salaries because there are fewer of them to go around, male or female. If you are a female Software Development, are you commanding a salary like this? There is no way of knowing without more data which leads me to wonder if all tech jobs are created equal?
